When Ghibli Studios began talking to me about the possibility of Hayao Miyazaki making an Earthsea movie, I wrote Diana Wynne Jones – out of the blue, we’d never met or corresponded – to ask her how her experience with Ghibli was when they were making Howl’s Moving Castle. She replied immediately with such a good-natured, funny letter that I couldn’t resist answering back, and so got an even funnier letter. I don’t have that correspondence in my computer any more, but I remember her description of the people who appeared on her doorstep and announced that they were bringing presents for her from Ghibli Studios. One of them was a Japanese man about six feet five inches tall wearing a Scottish tartan kilt, sporran, and bonnet. The presents were equally mysterious. I think one was a sword, and she hadn’t yet figured out what some of the others were. I wish I could have known her!
